History

Personality:
Strict but caring - More so noted earlier in life, Jiang Cheng was a teenager who followed the strict lifestyle that his mother demanded of him, desiring for him to get better than WuXian. He also wanted others to follow this well, pointing out that WuXian frequently didn’t. But he also looked out for WuXian, reminding him that his antics would get him into trouble and even trying to stop it if he saw it coming in advance. He also cared deeply about his sister, preferring that she was happy. When she broke off her engagement to ZiXuan, he accepted it. When their engagement was back on, he accepted it as well and even helped sneak her in her wedding clothes to Yiling so WuXian could see her before she got married since he wouldn’t have been allowed to attend. He even kept Yanli’s wish that WuXian pick her son’s courtesy name – RuLan. Even after everything, Ling’s courtesy name was still made RuLan.

One might even say that for people he cares about, his bark is worse than his bite. When he was younger, before the issues with WuXian sparked his anger to grow, he had an oddly morbid sense of humor towards his family. In an alternate reality (mo dao zu shi), WuXian was trying to get WangJi’s forehead ribbon at Phoenix Mountain, intending to blindfold himself. Cheng first complained at him for bothering WangJi then asked if he was planning on using the ribbon to hang himself and that he would give him his belt to do the job, adding “you’re welcome”. Also in the present time, he frequently threatens to break Jin Ling’s legs but he has never actually laid a hand on his nephew with intent to harm him.

Also, remember those the three dogs he had to give up as a child? He had named them "Jasmine", "Princess", and "Little Love". Ling apparently has learned this well from him, naming his own spiritual dog "Fairy" - "Little Fairy" while still a pup.

Competitive - Ever since he was a child, he has been competitive. He held a long, one-sided rivalry with WuXian who barely practiced but still bested him in cultivation. This was partially fueled by his parents, father Jiang FengMian seeming to favor WuXian and mother Madam Yu loudly reminding him he had a son and he should stop favoring the child of a servant. As such, he tried very hard to get better than WuXian, often falling just behind. It nearly ruined their relationship until WuXian swore that he would always be Cheng’s right hand, thus assuring Cheng that he did not want to take over as sect leader and his abilities would be used to better the Jiang sect, not himself.

Vendetta - Cheng is quick to hold a grudge. He quickly developed a grudge against the Wens for the burning of Lotus Pier, bound and determined to kill all of them whether they had been involved or not. At that time, he focused more solely on defeating the Wens than acknowledging other issues, like WuXian’s demonic cultivation. As long as he was helping them, it was fiiiiine... He also developed a vendetta against WuXian, wanting to find WuXian’s soul after death so he could question and punish him.

Anger Issues - What Cheng is most noted for are his anger issues. It does not take much to get him into a rage, so much so that even his own nephew is afraid to go to him with bad news. Because of his hatred of the dark arts - which reminds him of WuXian - he has been known to kidnap and torture those he suspects of possessing WuXian’s soul. He even wanted to take Mo XuanYu (who actually was WuXian given the body of XuanYu’s own free will) back to the Lotus Pier after even Zidian failed to prove possession (see abilities). His anger issues are so bad, he is blacklisted by female cultivators as a potential husband, on top of being very picky about a wife.

Status Conscious - Jiang Cheng is very aware of his own status as well as the statuses of others. This also goes back to his parents’ fights, where Madam Yu frequently complained to her husband of him favoring the child of a servant over his own children. He refuses to acknowledge Jin Guangyao’s accomplishments because he is the son of a prostitute. He also transfers this same issue to Jin Ling, demanding he is better than other juniors by catching the best prize during night hunts, even if it requires cheating. Since he helped to raise Ling, clearly his failings are also Cheng’s failings.

Easily Manipulated - If one knows the right button to press, they could easily influence Jiang Cheng’s reaction. For example, like others, believing that WuXian was still controlling the puppets at the meeting where WuXian eventually died, blaming him for the death of their sister. In the slightly different version of mo dao zu shi, he led the charge on the Burial Mounds to kill WuXian, other cultivators egging him on about the deaths of Jin ZiXuan and Jiang Yanli. He was also tricked to going to the Burial Mounds by Su She where he was nearly killed along with other senior cultivators, Jin Ling and other juniors being used as bait.

Abilities & Skills:
In general, he is able to use cultivation as the Sect Leader of the Yumeng Jiang sect. What this means is that he is able to:
• Manipulate his own spiritual energy
• Sword flying - it is common that cultivators with a decent golden core and sufficient training can fly on their swords
• Two Spiritual Weapons - Jiang Cheng is one of the few with two weapons. His sword he received as a teenager is Sandu. He also was given the family heirloom Zidian by his mother before she passed. It normally takes the shape of a ring with a snake bracelet. Once activated, it becomes a purple whip, emitting purple sparks. It has the ability to listen only to those its owner has given it the ability to listen to and if a person was being possessed by a spirit against their will, Zidian could separate the possessing spirit from the victim.

He is also able to fire a bow and arrow, fight with a sword, and ride a horse.

Inventory/Companions:
1. Zidian - family heirloom that appears to be a ring, usually turns into an electrified whip
2. Sandu - sword
3. Jiang silver bell – a sect item for Yunmeng Jiang. It is a bell whose ringing is supposed to calm one’s mind and steady one’s focus
4. Clothes on his back

Choice: Merrow
Reason: Being from the area of Yunmeng Jiang in the series, the association with water is very appropriate. Lotus Pier is located on a large lake and they are one of the few sects where their disciples know how to swim because of this proximity to water. Lotus, the symbol of the sect, grows exclusive in water. References to poisons are common around Jiang Cheng, playing into the poisonous barbs as a requirement. Zidian is literally a metal snake that sits around his wrist like a bracelet and his sword Sandu has a toad as its pummel - snakes and toads being two of the five poisons. Also by itself, the characters for Sandu mean three poisons. His personality is also said to be quite poisonous if you are on his bad side. There is also the irony factor that his main weapon, Zidian (which likely won't function, but will be a fancy thing like the merrow hoard) turns into an electrified whip... and merrow are weak to electricity so even if Zidian did function, he wouldn't be able to use it.
